Sorry guys, I just voted for Celica, me being European and so ... I hope you don't mind, but I can cope with this name. However as I wrote on another trhead I would like to see a new name coming up. But none of the names from this poll. Well maybe 86, but simply 86, without FT-. But this on the other hand would be meaningless for the "outsiders". aaaaarrrrrrrrrrrgggghhhh
Anyway whatever name will be decided upon by Toyota for our small European market I will manage to find a way to forge out 86 in chromed japanese letters and fix it on the trunk

and maybe remove the "factory default" name
    Sorry again.

I voted for ft86 because it just sounds funny. When people ask what did you buy? You can say I bought eighty six feet of car. (86 ft)

AE86 and Trueno just seem too fanboy-ish to me. Corolla doesn't even make an sense. tC makes sense but I wouldn't want it to be called that nor do I want it to be a Scion.

please don't let it be a celica....the celica name just isn't that strong. There has never been a stock celica that was anything more then a wannabe. Please Toyota start fresh and make this the FT-86. Even something else, but don't brand this awesome car before it even has a chance to fly...

The Celica has always been a bit bastardized as a brand. Although don't forgot the Celica was born RWD.

    1st Gen = A20 & A35 - 70-77 (RWD)
    2nd Gen = A40 & A50 - 77-82 (RWD)
    3rd Gen = A60 - 81-85 (RWD)

After this it lost its roots and went FWD/AWD for two gens then the latest gen FWD.

I think Subaru has a much more difficult task of naming their version. They don't have the long list of names to choose from like Toyota.

Also their namenclature is kinda weird. They have the WRX and WRX Sti, but then Legacy, and Outback. So do they go with a name or letters? Americans supposedly prefer letters (even though they don't even know what they mean most of the time), but it's the first completely new model Subaru has had since the ever failing Tribeca.

    Like I said, it's a touch task.

SC(Sport Coupe)X (assuming it's AWD) and SCX STi wouldn't be bad.

I'd still buy it if they name it a Celica, but telling my friends I own a celica just wouldn't be the same. MR2 and Supra are strong names, but supra is out and brings with it a large price tag, MR2 doesn't fit. Celica was a stronger name in the 80s. I think toyota really tried to revive it with the last celica GTS, but it was faster on paper then in reality. Hey, maybe a beautiful car like this with 200/200 from a low end torque boxer engine can revive the celica? Celica Turbo......just doesn't sound right yet....Celica G......nah....

It would have to be only a 2.0 then. 2500GT just doesn't have a good ring to it. And again, for American consumers I think that nameplate conjures up thoughts of the 3000GT.

Will Toyota give us an 'unconventional' car (for them - light weight, RWD) but give it a conventional name - like Celica?

^Very good point. Thats why I voted Levin, it is not conventional in the least bit IMO.

Hmmm, methinks that Toyota will bow to its conservative side and give it a traditional established name, and that is most likely going to be 'Celica'.
