    First 86

So, I guess my first post was a little too exuberant and unprofessional. Sorry, I had a few when I saw it, and was excited however, here it is.

On Thursday January 12, 2012 at 9am PST, Scion will launch a purchase request website (Introducing The All New Scion FR-S | SCIONFIRST86.COM).

Submit an entry with your desired color and transmission selection for your FR-S.

The opportunity to enter will be available for 8 hours and 6 minutes.

Scion will contact you within 24 hours of your request and let you know if you have been selected for the opportunity to purchase or lease one of the first 86 FR-Ss in the United States.
Good luck everyone else. The above website has all the details on how to get into the lottery.

Sounds like a marketing gimmick. I bet more than 86 get one and it is not like they are limited editions either.

    A few things,

After reading though all the rules, I'm pretty sure it is a marketing gimmick, but I also think only 86 will be going out. They don't however state how much earlier than everyone else you will be getting it.

When you sign up you state only your color, and your transmission preference. They will then notify you within 24 hours if you've been chosen. At that point you pick out a local dealer and put a $500 down payment on the car and wait. When the vehicle is on it's way they will notify you, and you can go pick it up. Financing can be handled before or after pickup.

If you don't get in right away, and people drop off the list, you will be moved up the list, and might be notified at a later date that you've become one of the first 86.

I really think this contest is for a few reasons.

    1) to gauge interest in the vehicle
    2) to determine color/transmission preferences so they get a good idea of how many to manufacture and send to what region.
    3) to try to set a "sales record" by having as many of their cars spoken for as possible the day it goes on sale.

This is just a guess really, but it's what i might do if I were in their spot.

Actually, I don't think this is a guess. The marketing team is probably also responsible for finding what specifics, how many and whom are interested in their products.

I agree with Robh. It is a very clever way to do a survey of who wants what vehicle.

Why not enter into the survey with price very low, like $20k USD. So the survey will show every one want the price low and Scion will come up with a more strip down model(the lady model that come with too) that keep the price low.

Sadly, if enough people are interested, the price will go up. They are only making so many per year, so they will probably gouge people either off the bat or soon if they get back orders, which seems likely. I have been looking for a car with miata handling, sized like a 240sx and mod potential like an mr2 turbo since before the solstice came out.

With 11 hours to go untill this goes live, the only question left is do I request asphalt or ultramarine. I've wanted a gunmetal/deep grey color, however, the ultramarine is growing on me.

It looks like they've left it open longer than the 8 hour 6 minutes posted.

Def a marketing gimmick, regardless I did put myself on the wait list and will now patiently wait for the stealership to call.

I'm guessing they did it basied on sequential sign in, and opened the contest up 2 hours early. I signed up at the posted time, and got waitlisted because they were given away by then. Then just left the site up all night to data mine and get more people to bombard with marketing.
