    Frs or 2011 tc?

I need to purchase a car before june because i need some form of transportation to get to college. The two cars i have in mind are the 2011 tc and hopefully the frs. Do you think the FRS will be available for purchase before june? If not i'll go with the tc.

    Thanks in advance.

Buy a fairly reliable used car for now, then wait.

Personally i may be heading over to the 2011 tC soon, because i had my eye on the Subaru variant for a long time. But now Subaru is up in the air, i may just buy a 2011 tC now and trade it in when the Subie version comes out. *crossing fingers for AWD.

If you have until June then in December the release date should be know making your decision a pretty easy one.

I would actually skip the first year of the FR-S, due to the inherent bugs that always have to be worked out the first year of any new model. I was thinking of doing a 2/3yr lease on a '11 tC, then getting into an FR-S when the lease comes due. Otherwise, I'd be waiting for 2-3 years before I'd see a 2nd-year FR-S.

This really isn't the case for all but is a reasonable practice. However, since this is Subaru and Toyota, I'm keen on believing that Toyota would do much to get this car running fairly well first year out, and they would correct issues immediately the following year. I do believe they really can't take shortcuts and gamble just to get the car out, else it would be out already.
I have a 08 STI, first hatch year, and not too much has been done to correct it the following year or two. Surely, some nuts/bolts, a bushing or two, and 3m tape perhaps, but it took them nearly 3+ years for it. Maybe Subaru will be on a different path in the future but I would say it will take a couple of year to find out, due to their "new" (product outlook) direction.

the engine is new and so is the chassis, but it's not really "new." Subaru has built how many boxer 4 over the years (meaning assembling each one)? So the people have experience and the build isn't far different. Also, the body is from a legacy or wrx (depending on where you read), so the mounting points, etc are similar. Point blank, this car is a remodel with existing parts. Might be modified some and have some extra tech, but Subies are technical to begin with, so it's nothing new. I'd expect some minor stuff, but the mechanics should be good to go.

How long have they been testing this thing now???? YEARS! Oh, and tracking it too, btw.

What are your opinions on the 2011 tc? interior \exterior wise.

I think its a gorgeous car and picture don't do it justice, it looks amazing in person. I actually went to the scion dealership yesterday and they stopped production on the 2011 model and are starting on the 2012, the salesman said no major changes would be made.

It's ok. I'd rather get a civic SI, but I'd not get any fwd new either. The Sentra SE-R's ain't too shabby, if a fwd is your flavor. Personally, for ~15-18k, I'd be looking for a used STI, EVO, or even a IS300.

For 15-18K I would be looking for an FD.

FD's are nice, but I'm not a rotary fan.

I'd rather have a modded mr2 turbo, which can be found in the 9-11k for a very clean one.

Or an N/A Supra, albeit a high mileage one.

    Or a stock 240sx.

Honestly Tc VS frs would be easy for me. FWD VS RWD.

    Easy winner.

Yeah, me too. I would buy a $2500 car and just drive it till you get the model that comes out. Buying a new car means you just lost 4-5k by the time you trade it in. Buying a beater will save, if you get one that runs descent. I'm pretty good at fixing cars, so beaters don't scare me. lol. Have owned my 95 rolla for 5 years and 100k. Bought it for $2400. Now have 3 fixes (not counting 2 timing belts and 2 sets of tires). One fix cost me less than $30 or maybe $150 if I did take it in. Had a flex pipe and exh. manifold leak that cost me $250 for me to do. The last, well, I dunno yet. , but shouldn't be too bad. Considering that's 5 years with 100k on it, it's been really good to me.

Agreed beater is the way to go. I wish I had a beater DD to drive to work everyday while I continue to mod the Kouki. I have often thought about picked up an S13 hatch to drive around.

Dude, NOTHING is more reliable than a 5s or 4a/7afe car. I sh!t you not, I've put my rolla through worse than hell. I was doing pizza delivery when the national guard was out because of an ice/snow storm. Drove pizza delivery for over 2 years in it (50k easy city). Mind you, I do change the oil, but drive it like I stole it from an X girl friend. Very much thinking about getting a lower mileage one when mine does die. I actually had another driver trying to buy mine from me because he'd had 3. All of which made over 250k. The camry/celica's are the same way. They just are built tough. It's great to be able to work on my mr2 and have the rolla to drive when I need it. I wouldn't buy a sporty beater, buy the most economical/reliable car made and then save. Working for me.

    lovin the sig!!!

I would not compare tc and FR-S (and personally, would not buy a tc), but I understand your situation and have some news for you. I went to a Scion dealer in my area yesterday. Asked about FR-S and the first guy (a new guy) did not know anything about FR-S. A more senior guy came out and told me the first time anyone would get this car is actually June next year. He said he had gone to a training of the car and been told that each dealer would be allocated 1 or 2 cars initially. He said those would be sold before they make it to the dealer. What I do not know is if you will hear the same story at other dealers. So, here is my recommendation. If you have time it would be the best to visit a Scion dealer and explain your situation. I am sure they will accomodate your request as they would sell a car to you either way.

Here is my take. Depend on where you live.
A Civic beater for ~$4000. Insurance cost about $600/yr liability only. A year later you can resale your beater for $3600. Total cost = $1200.
A new tC, ~$18000. Insurance cost about $1050 full coverage. A year later, your tC is worth $15300. Total cost = $3750.
    A new FRS/BRZ, I am est $4800 total cost.
in this case, by getting a beater, you saved min $2500 for the down payment of your new car. Just by the insurance alone, you are almost even.
Unless your parents are loaded, and money is not an issue, get the beater or tC.
The Subie Midwest office told me given there is no natural disaster or war and the boad does not sink in the ocean, BRZ will arrive in US in late May early June.
Good luck of finding one even with $2500 mark up over MSRP in June.

Sorry that I am going to side track the discussion for a bit. I think marups on the first few cars are somewhat likely as there are some people who have tons of money and gotta have these cars (toyota or subaru) as soon as they come out. But, do you think the markup will become a norm? If so, that's pretty much a deal breaker for me. I am thinking the market is still very small and once the cars have been distributed the demand will quickly flatten. I do not have to have one immediately, but I want one.

Hypedforcar, I think you'd be making a big mistake to get into a tC now and then switch to an FR-S when it comes out. That would be a big waste of money. I say wait; if you don't have a decent car to last you until the FR-S comes out, buy a used 90's Corolla or something that you won't lose money on. You will have cheap, reliable transportation and can re-sell it for what you paid for it. The tC is not much more than a more stylish 4cyl Camry. It looks nice but performance isn't that great, and a RWD FR-S should give you more smiles-per-gallon (and similar miles-per-gallon, too) than a FWD tC could ever hope to.

I do not think the mark up will last over the first 2 month. It will prob end around Sept. Because some of the states (IA, MN, MI, WI may be IL) demand will slow down for winter season and stock will pick up a little. But CA and FL and may be TX will be hard to find deal below MSRP.

I'm just curious how a college kid can afford a new car.

I'm 42, and have yet to purchase a new car.
