Subaru 086A STi

While the regular Subaru 086A is expected to be exactly the same as the Toyota version albeit with subtle exterior/interior styling differences, it’s the high performance STi version that’s getting the most attention now that the FT-86 Concept has broken cover ahead of this month’s Tokyo Motor Show. The standard 086A of course utilizes Subaru’s EJ20 flat-four boxer engine with D4-S direct injection, an Aisin 6-speed gearbox and a rear differential as used on the Lexus IS250/350. The rumored output of 200PS has been quoted once again as to be “almost certain” but a conflicting rumor from another source sets the output as being low as 160PS. Nevertheless, the STi Version should answer people’s prayers for more power.

Holiday Auto (HA)*reports that the STi Version will use*the EJ25 2.5L engine*that’s expected to produce between 240 – 250PS which is enough, HA say, to turn the*086A into a true performance car. An EJ25 turbo also hasn’t been ruled out, it seems that the Toyota/Subaru partnership have gone to great lengths to listen to what customers want and if the voices are loud enough, may come through with a boosted 086A Sti. In keeping with the Impreza WRX STi, the 086A STi Version will apparently get wider front and rear guards to accommodate a wider track with wider wheels and tires. The know-how gathered from tuning the suspension for the WRX STi will be used to improve the 086A’s handling characteristics,*although HA*stop short of*saying*the parts will be directly carried over. We should also expect some additional STi only aero parts such as a unique front bumper and rear trunk spoiler to give the STi Version a more motorsports inspired look.

Although it’s not confirmed yet, there’s a strong possibility the Subaru 086A STi Version will be shown at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show or not long after at the 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon and will*hit*showrooms shortly thereafter.

google translated from the BestMotoring.cn

"The earlier Japanese media reports rumors appear to have been confirmed, Subaru / Toyota's test team has a formal presence in the north Nuerburgring circuit, and began a highly disguised two-door sports car prototype for testing. German media have generally agreed that the forthcoming launch in 2011 of Subaru 086A STI, will be powered by 300 hp output level of the EJ25 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with six-speed manual gearbox and rear-drive layout, a new car The performance will be very close to the BMW 135i Coupe! As new car prices, the market is estimated that with the cheaper than the BMW 135i over the past three Zhisi Cheng."

300HP wouldn't be exactly true to the AE86, but would still make for an awesome car, albeit in a totally different manner! I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Some are suggesting of the Subie "So the ugly sister car will get the goods, huh?"
I hope they both get several engines... choice is great!

I'll fire a shot across the bow here though by saying I prefer the look (and the possible performance offerings) of the preliminary Subie sketch over the Toyo. I think they are both good looking and the differences in looks won't be large.

The Subie comes across to me as more edgy, purposeful & aggressive. With the larger areas for fog lights, larger wheel wells, rear spoiler, reputation, a higher likelihood of upgraded tires, brakes, suspension, and more importantly engine power available than the Toyo might offer. It will probably be somewhat less comfortable as a daily driver. Brand reputation... I'd wager the overwhelming majority of enthusiasts would look at the Subie and picture it to be more exciting. It will undoubtedly be more expensive to purchase, and maintain (the limited number & sometimes dubious service of Subie dealers versus the vast number of excellent Toyota dealers).

The Toyo looks to me to be cleaner, less cluttered, smoother, simpler, more "Grand Touring" in its appearance. Less pretentious with no wing. It will probably be sold with a much higher percentage of automatic transmissions. It will be far closer to the AE86 principle in weight, power & cost than the Subie. It will probably be bought by a younger crowd than the higher powered and more expensive Subie versions (as such, it might even cost more to ensure). As they get older, I'd wager the Toyo is much more likely to have "rice" added to the looks, versus the Subie being more likely to have legitmate performance upgrades.

Those are my impressions. From the rumors and info. discussed on the two companies versions of these two largely Subaru assembled and manufactured cars so far, and with what brings me more driving pleasure (power & handling versus drifting ability)... they are leading me pretty strongly to see if I can pony up the extra $ for the highest power STi version Subie will make.

I just hope people aren't holding out for an AWD version. After seeing the actual concept it's just not in the cards and the RWD layout will be balanced really well so why mess with a good thing.

Even if we don't get the Subaru version at all, think of the swaps people will be doing to these things. These are exciting times folks.

I hear you on that. I want the RWD version. No AWD for me.

The problem is that the if you look at this car form the side you will see that where they have to mount the motor, damn near against the firewall, it would then make the front axles have to mount in the oil pan or even further up. So here are your options:

1. Extend the nose of the car and put the motor where it traditionally would go in a Subaru. That would make the car ugly and ruin it's balance.

2. Design a new transmission that uses some sort of transfer case and all sorts of overly complicated stuff. That would make the car really expensive and I doubt the manufacture is going to be willing to eat that expense or we would be willing to pay 50k+ for the car.

3. Not make it AWD. Sell it as a Scion here for as cheap as possible and let the aftermarket go to town on it. Best idea by far.

As long as we can shove some 255's in the rear then AWD is almost pointless. Plus anything more than 250-300hp in a car like this and your missing the point of the car. Balance will be everything in this car.

It's running a Boxer motor, how would you not sell it as a Subaru? I highly doubt Subaru would allow the use of the motor if there wasn't a profit in it for them. That said though, I agree with making it a Scion. They're cheap, it would refresh the brand, and due to it being so cheap, the aftermarket would eat it up.

I don't know how much 'pull' Toyota has with its stake (16%?) in Subaru, but it would be in Toyota's interests to have the release of the Subaru version of this car 'delayed' as long as possible, so it can take the marketing 'high ground'.

300Hp 135i killer....I hope so!

But rear-wheel drive??? If it's a Subaru Sti version shouldn't it be AWD since their entire line up is.

It is. And Subaru seems to be debating that internally with Toyota right now. Even Subaru's NA head honcho doesn't think it fits in with the brand.

I'm wondering if Toyoya will back out of this "partnership". With all that is going on in Washington regarding the recalls. Or for that matter if Subaru will be interested in Toyota ?

JUst speculation at this point, although the recent image of the Mule Toyobaru in California is good news.

No word on official release, dates, or anything.

Subaru is not going to try and make this chassis AWD. Its just not realistic and wouldd make the car far more expensive than it could sell it for. They will also not put the big motor in as they would suddenly have a car that would give their flagship WRX STI a big run for its money with a lighter curb weight and lower price.

In short if Suby brings this car to america it will be a RWD car. If it has a turbo it will be handicapped with at most WRX power. I for one am fine with this as it would be easy to turn up the heat with bolt on's.

I can tell you right now it won't be RWD.
It would be sick if they drop the ej25 in it, though I can see them refraining...

Huh? Its not going to be FWD and it can't be AWD.... you think they are going to power it with Flintstone drive or something?

This will be a RWD car and I'm willing to bet you a base model of one of this chassis on it.

Hopefully the U.S will see its first STI coupe. Im definitely hold out on buying a new car for that. A lightweight AWD turbo coupe sports car for under $40k= sales threw the roof for Subaru. But doubtful at that price range it would have to have a 4.2 slowest 0-60. Because it has to leave a 12 year old 22b in the dust

Yeah only 400 built. Anyway I don't like all this rwd 260hp talk for a STI from motor trend, I was thinking more like 300+ awd with redone everything. BS

260hp RWD sounds like a dream to me.

That's an interesting aspect of this forum.

Yeah it does sound like a dream, but were talking STI for a 35k+ car, a 300+hp Nissan Z sounds like a better deal for RWD. My first car was a Z31 turbo, i drove plenty $100,000 cars working at a detail shop but nothing could out handle that Z. I can't see Subaru in a fight it will definitely lose. I think for a cheaper toyota version with less power RWD is cool, but for a 35k STI I better get AWD, or I'll see in my Z
