the Subaru global site stated back in February that their sports car in cooperation with Toyota would be RWD, at least that's what was understood by most of us here

To make this car AWD, the motor would have to be raised and pushed forward (past the front wheels). It IS possible to do this. The result would be a shorter wheelbase, massive front overhang, huge understeer, unbalanced weight, and higher price tag. It would be great for straightline speed, but that's about it (unless of course you want an AWD coupe for daily use in snow/rain).

I guess they finally decided, yes they were always leaning toward RWD because of cost, but they were keeping their options open. They will not let anyone know what the car actually looks like, it's still hush -hush. Not until Geneva car show. I really don't put to much on emails from cooperate offices, there can alway be an element of confusion, and I always look for a credible source, anyone can but out a memo on line. I like to see someone of credibility like Product Manager TOSHIO MASUDA. Anyway it doesn't matter to me now, Subaru's don't get parked in the winter when the weather is bad, THAT'S WHEN IT'S TIME TO PLAY !!!!!!!!!!! This car will be a very low volume niche vehicle to the Subaru faithful, nothing I want !!!!!!!!!!! Why would anyone want a rebadged Toyota, that are faithful to the Subaru brand.
The Geneva show already happened at the beginning of this month, and Subaru is holding back on the exterior until the Tokyo show. I agree though, I would certainly prefer an AWD turbo Subaru model, as I already own an STi; I'm a faithful.

Lol. If everyone on Zilvia deleted the posts that were common knowledge the site would lose 3/4 of it's content.

    RWD FTW!

awd is really only good in the snow and mud. if you can't drive in the rain with rwd, something is wrong. rwd owns awd. this is why most racing is done in rwd.

that said, it would've been cool for the subie to be awd and the scion as rwd. that means options. i like options. i would probably go rwd though. nothing like a little slip and go. that and less moving parts means less to break. lol

I am personally excited that Subaru is deciding to add a RWD model to their lineup. Besides, they already have the STI as their AWD flagship sports model so it makes no sense to market against it. A little variety never hurts (especially when considering all of their other models are AWDs).

it isn't easy to change a wheelbase. the suspension and wheel fitment can become an issue real quick. also, AWD is bad for straight line speed. it robs hp because of the heavier awd components and having to push all the wheels instead of just two. awd can usually launch harder because of traction, but a good set of tires and the right suspension will change that. the rest though is spot on. the whole idea behind their design is to improve handling dynamics by placing the engine/weight as centered and low as possible in the car.

why are they going the normally aspirated route... this upsets me toyota! I was always a huge fan of the 90s mr2s and especially the supras but in the late 1990s something died for toyota... I was hoping that that something would be sparked back to life with the ft 86/fr-s but I have a feeling that unless they decide to make a stock turbo car, this whole thing will just be a bunch of nothing... kinda sad

Those MR2's and Supra's that you claim to be such a big fan of sold more naturally aspirated cars than turbo models. The turbo model was a higher trim level, and neither Subaru nor Toyota has come out and said it won't be an option. Enough people are asking for it that it will happen. Subaru will already have a production turbo version of the FB20, it will go into the car. I wouldn't be surprised if Toyota waited to release a FI model until the Subaru version is launched, or if they just let Subaru do the FI models in the United States.

I am a fan of toyota in general, but the turbo option is what really made me a fan... If they dont have a stock turbo option, then i wont get this car... plain and simple!

This car could be given all wheel drive, and keep it's current engine placement. You'd have to use a system similar to what's on the new Ferrari FF. They run the front wheels off of the front of the crank shaft using hydraulic clutches. That would make this a $60,000 USD car atleast. But it'll be interesting to see if this technology spreads to more vehicles.

imo, that won't happen. If they wanted it to be awd, they'd change the wheelbase and engine mounting location. Still, that would defeat the whole idea behind this car. If you want a awd Subaru, buy a WRX or STI. I do think they should add a 2 door sleek version of the STI with a modified windshield tilted more rearword and less rear legroom/seating.

I don't think he was suggesting that it would really happen for the frs, i think he was just saying it was interesting to see if and how this tech will spread to other vehicles later
