Post Toyota Planning to Create "Gs" Performance Division

Toyota made big news when it displayed several eye-catching cars in its booth at the Tokyo Auto Salon a couple weeks ago. These cars were like nothing Toyota has shown before, slick interpretations of future and existing models, which not only looked sporty but supposedly featured significant performance enhancements. These cars wore the G's logo with the words "Toyota G Sports" written underneath.
G's is a new brand from Toyota that will gradually roll out cars in mid-2010, specializing in complete conversions of Toyota's existing products. In a word, G's will be the company's in-house tuning division, providing Toyota fans sporty cars customized to their own tastes. What will separate G's from other OEM tuner divisions like AMG, BMW's M and even the Lexus F cars is the customization angle as customers will be able to choose their level of tweaks. The changes to the cars will be applied to the exterior, interior and to the mechanical components, most notably the suspension.

While Toyota now has Modelista, which tunes Toyota cars with subtle body kits and slight performance upgrades, and TRD that mainly supplies performance parts, G's will focus on high-end tuning for street use. Thus, the cars that G's will create will be more expensive that the cars Modelista currently produces.

G's already showed a taste of what it has in mind with the FT-86 presented inside the Toyota booth as the Tokyo Auto Salon. The car was aggressive, attractive and the final product will have significantly more performance than stock.

Joining the FT-86 was a Mark X and Prius, which also showcased G's creativity. Reports are that G's will work closely with both Modelista and TRD to make its cars, the former supplying body kits and design advice, the latter making purely mechanical contributions. The new division will also look to Gazoo Racing, known as Toyota's GT racing division, for assistance as well, especially in the testing department. Gazoo also had a number of noteworthy models at the Tokyo Auto Salon, evidence that Toyota seems deadly serious about turning its image around into one that's sporty and exciting. -- reporting by Mak Tokuyama in Japan

PS: I know this isnt breaking news, but I found it interesting compared to some of the latest news.

So basically a Toyota version of Nismo. I wonder if Subaru will do anything like this.

    Which has always been TRD.

Which is why I find this Gs performance thing so off.

After a google search, my guess will be geared to the drift community or offer more complicated parts than Trd.

Saw this coming actually. Although im still confused why TRD wouldn't take the role unless they feel its not marketable to the intended market (drift).

Gazoo has been involved the entire time, consider it a good thing. If you recall this img was released during the Tokyo Motor Show 09.

Gazoo is a known name that seems to have some sort of specialization in the drifting world. TRD builds performance parts but not specifically for one sport so in essence seems Toyota is outsourcing for the FT.

It all means good news for the Ft buyers. I still want to see some Suby love in an area like this.

Guess I'll be buying TRD parts then since I won't be drifting my FT86.

I can't see these 3 divisions crossing over each other and offering the same parts inside packets with different labels on the top. Maybe its a pure marketing ploy, G's for the drift crowd, Modelista for the fashionable and TRD for the hard-core racer and rally guys. Maybe the answer is a selection of bits from all 3 of these crowds to make your FT-86 the 'ultimate' one....?

    Cool FT-86 G sports edition

Toyota has recently announced the creation of a new Branch that will make factory upgraded versions of their cars. This company is to be called G Sports. I'm not that crazy about the name but there first couple concepts seem like the real deal.
