2012 Toyota FT-86 or Subaru 216a Production Spy Shots!

This looks similar to the recent leaked rendering from last week. The wheels suggest this is actually the Subaru 216a, and not the Toyota FT-86 or Scion FR-S. Since the Subaru is still a mystery, its highly probable this is in fact a near production form of the Toyota FT-86.

We’ve got the first spy shots of prototypes for the production version of the string of Toyota FT-86 sports coupe concepts shown over the past two years, as well as the scorching Scion FR-S concept shown at the recent 2011 New York Auto Show.

The prototype, seen here testing in Germany, is for the Toyota version of the car, though it will be badged as a Scion when sold in the U.S. The lines on the prototype reveal that the aggressive styling of the past concepts, especially around the front window but also at the rear, will be toned down significantly for production.

Some thing worth noting whether it's a Toyota of a Suby.

Front LED strips flanking the grill are gone and have been replaced with larger fog lights and amber turn signal combo.

Headlights are projectors with a strip of LED's in them. (cool)

Rear diffuser has been toned down but looks like it has somewhat survived.

Last, you can tell this is damn near a full production car except maybe the exhaust because everything hass been toned down including the fenders and all of the necessary production bits are their.

for me it's similar to the FT-86II.
Just the front bumper is ligthly different and the wheels come from a Subaru STI.
Otherwise the rear wing is exactly the same.

Exhaust is the same as the FT-86 ii, but the rest of the car looks like a toned down baby of the FR-S and the ii. Seeing that it has wipers, full turn signals, door handles, a speed bump friendly ride height, and functional mirrors that they stole from a z33, I'd put money on this being a production model.

also, the wheel wells look like they'll probably take an inch wider up front and at least 2 inches wider out back, oh happy face indeed.

If they make something like this ugly smurf vehicle i will rip my hair out & personally ban this vehicle from my wish list. Look at the ugly tail lights and messed up design. Also what is up with the huge circular muffler tips. You could fit a turkey in there? Now ill take back all those negative comments if they are only truly "test mules". Personally i like the Lexus ISF exaust & tail light combo.

    FR-S Prototype spied on Nurburgring

Swirly camo is hard to decipher...

Edmunds spotted the car, looking more production vs. the show car at NYC Auto Show. I still like the look, but it's toned down a little

The article discusses steering rack details, and some about the body work too.

FYI Edmunds has a more detailed article on it, discussing the steering rack.

I'm sure the cartoonish look of the rendering won't be quite the same as production. This one has sharp, curved angles everywhere: Front fascia (look at the side shot), spoiler, head and taillights (I know part of them are camo'd, but you can still tell) and the taillights aren't as wide (hate white Euro's )

But, it is looking more and more like there will be no AWD option, which I am kinda sad about. Is Subaru really going to change their marketing?? Seems like a huge jump:

"Every Subaru comes standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive for better stability, efficiency and a quicker response to slippery conditions.

    Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive standard on:
    All Subaru Models**"
    - Subaru.com
** jk, there's one we forgot

I think I'm going to coin a new phrase "CRZ'd". As in "You've been CRZ'd!". To take the place of "punked". This in preparation for the release of the FR-S, if this is the final product after all these radical, exotic, concepts. I'd have to say we were all CRZ'd if this flat sided bore comes to production. Anyone notice that it still has the side fender vents from the ft86 II that we all laughed at. I'm hoping this is not the direction they are going after showing us the frs concept. Please?

I hope that this is the Subaru version of the car, a development of the see-through concept they showed previously.

Five Axis is possibly going to get into the aftermarket game. They have a dead link on their website for 5AD (five axis design). Hopefully They will sell some kind of kit to make this car resemble the FR-S concept. Specifically the hood and front fenders.

Where the hood meets the fender and headlight ruined this car. The fender arches and hood lines made the concept special, and now it's gone. That squared off hood sucks.

The tails are probably beveled and the trunk swings out some as it comes up. Just my guess.

There are still some leds on the top part of the headlight next to the projector.

I am really unhappy they got rid of many of the curves found in the 2 and the 5-axis versions. The vented hood is gone too. I just really don't like those big tails like that. In fact all the other versions have better looking rear ends! I like a nice rump.

Overall, I like the ft86 2 the best because the curves and angles seem to be best laid out. If they just removed the little fender grilles, some of the details on the bumpers and the led's on the bumper, the car would have been awesome. Now it looks like it's uglified and it probably won't have alot of power or come out with any turbo option? I might just keep the mr2!

    Mr West,
You are right. I agree 100%. The picture in the magazine is very bad. Just bad...
