Post Best Car "Toyota FT-86 Will Cost 29k, No Wait $16K"

Last week Best Car gifted us with good news about the Toyota FT-86 is on time and on track for an early 2012 release, info relayed from Toyota's Project General Manager for Sport Vehicle Management Division, Shigeyuki Hori and Kazuo Okino. With said nugget Best Car also reported the mid level FT86 would cost about $29,000 or 2.5 million yen.

Today Best Car has corrected this report and is now stating the a Toyota FT-86 will indeed cost what was originally planned, reported to be about 1.4 million yen, or $16,000. If true, get ready, Toyota as we once knew them will have officially been reborn.

This is fantastic news! 16k = 20k for the one you will actually want, or 22-25k'ish for the one with more balls (hopefully). All in all, this is a great thing.

I choose not to believe any of it until I see some facts from Toyota.

Yea I hate the roller coaster but alas, its news and so I felt I should report it. I feel its semi legitimate considering they gave a rather believable report and might of been in contact with the Project Managers afterwords. I completely believe the 2012 release though, its what Toyota said at Geneva.

In comparison, the Scion tC costs about $16k base. I don't see why the FT-86/FR-S would cost any more at base trim. Its just no frills car with fundamentals that moisten the panties.

I'm waiting to hear what or if this car was based on another chassis or engine platform. If it turns out to be something totally new, right on! If based on a Subaru through and through, I might look at the car a bit differently. No less addicted mind you. However if its based on something else then that 16k price tag seems legit.

It will be a different driveline configuration in a Subaru chassis, so with some luck, it will feel and drive like a sports car, and not a bastardised cross-breed.

All I can hope is that it out performs the genesis. Don't get me wrong, the genesis is a good car and a step in the right direction for hyundai, but I think everyone expected better numbers from the car. I know this car isn't going to be all about drag racing, but just as a means to measure acceleration, it had better put down better tha mid 15 second 1/4 times like the genesis turbo. Even consistent mid to high 14's wouldn't be bad, with low 14 seconds with a good driver. I'm not anticipating 13's here.

I compared the 4cyl turbo genesis with the FT-86, because I think they will be closer in price range. A track v6 will cost you upper 20's.

The genesis numbers look good on paper, but the one I drove felt like a pig. It didn't feel very nimble, which is what I look for in cars. Even getting back into my civic si (which I really don't care for) was was welcoming, compared to the genesis GT. I can't imagine how the 4cyl turbo feels.

No offense to anyone who owns one, but it just didn't do it for me. I'm sure with some stiffer bushings and suspension the car would feel much more geared toward what I like.

Interesting fact is that the current Mitsubishi Lancer and Hyndai Genesis share the same engine. Both cars are nice but FT-86 is the way to go!!

My fellow admin can chime in on the 4G63, hopefully they resolved some of the assembly issues which lead to crankwalk.

This is a cheap card to pull, but I felt it was an appropriate answer from Wiki:

Peak power and torque figures of 206 kW and 422 N·m are for Japanese market Lancer Evolution models[5] and figures of 217 kW and 407 N·m are for US market models.[6]
The 4B11T is the first engine in the Lancer Evolution series that uses a die-cast aluminium cylinder block versus the cast-iron block used in the previous turbocharged 4G63 engine that powered all previous models. The engine weight has been reduced by 12 kg (26 lb) compared to the 4G63, even with the addition of a timing chain instead of a belt and MIVEC continuous variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts (the 4G63 had MIVEC valve timing & lift switching type on the intake only). A revised turbocharger offers up to 20-percent quicker response at lower engine speeds compared to previous 4G63. The 4B11T offers a broader torque curve, producing more torque than the 4G63 at all engine speeds, helped by the engine's square bore and stroke design (both measure 86.0 mm). Redline starts at 7,000 rpm, with a fuel cutout at 7,600 rpm to protect the engine.[6]
A semi-closed deck structure, an integrated ladder frame and four-bolt main bearing caps contribute to engine strength, durability and lower NVH levels. Unlike the 4G63, the 4B11T does not use a balancer shaft. The semi-floating pistons of the 4G63 have been replaced with a fully floating pistons for the 4B11T. Aluminium is also used for the timing chain case and cylinder head cover. The engine features an electronically controlled throttle, an isometric short port aluminium intake manifold and the stainless steel exhaust manifold is positioned at the rear of the engine. The use of a direct-acting valvetrain eliminates the need of the roller rocker arm configuration previously used in the 4G63. The 4B11T features built-up hollow camshafts and its valve stem seals are integrated with the spring seats. The internal components of the 4B11T engine have been reinforced to withstand high levels of boost.[6]

Ive been tempted to go test a Genesis for the hell of it, but no one I know has one, for good reason.

If a car lacks that nimble feeling then I'm in the same boat, I will HATE the car. Its why I have never owned an American car.
