Media First Toyota GT 86 Runs the Dyno

Well, that didn't take long. The First Toyota FT-86 (a.k.a. Scion FR-S) has made its way to the dyno courtesy of the good people at HKS. How'd it do? The vehicle managed to spin the rollers at 170 rear-wheel horsepower, which dovetails with the 200 crank horsepower announced by Toyota and Subaru after calculating a 15-percent driveline loss. Of course, whenever HKS gets involved, you can feel safe betting your lunch money that forced induction won't be far behind. True to form, HKS showed off its handiwork on a drift car version of the new sports coupe from Toyota.

The FT-86 looks more than happy to dance through a few chicanes sideways, and we can't wait to see the vehicle go fender-to-fender with the best of them. Click past the jump to check out the dyno video for yourself.

Nice find. I wonder what the torque was.

If HKS releases a turbo "kit" I will just see what they release and piece it together for cheaper than the $$$$$$ they will charge.

I am not sure how much power this car will put down without dropping in forged pistons on top of maybe fuel pump, rods, a turbo kit and then a tune. Without a turbo model on the horizon, I'm leaning on building the mr2. Just can't see this car making power with major $ right now. Saving for now and keeping my fingers crossed!

Damn that's disappointing. I wonder if an ECU tweak can get it to the 200hp promised... 170 hp doesn't make it much more appealing than my current car. That TRD super charger better be affordable if im even going to think about buying it now.

There is the difference between the engine output of 200hp and what is being put on the ground of 170hp. There are internal friction and losses from transmission and other things in between we don't know.

TRD superchargers usually run about 4 to 5k depending on application.

^Yea the Tc option was around 3K. So maybe $3500? I wonder so they just bolt a supercharger on or is it a lower compression engine + supercharger.

nope, they don't mess with internals for any trd kit that I know of. These HKS cars seem like fully built cars with internals. This engine and setup remind me of the 2zz. Higher rev's, higher compression and built for efficiency. That means it's could be hard to mod without completely building up almost everything. The drive shaft and rear diff could be a weak link too. This is why I like the mr2 so much, easy to get 300+ whp without a build. Even if you build, the tranny, stock rods, crank, and axles will hold up.

If they come out with a trd model, I could see them possibly doing a lower compression setup. If anyone does something hardcore with this chassis, I bet it's Subaru. Toyota just doesn't take chances are make any real enthusiast cars since the demise of the mr2 (f' the mrs), alltrac/gt4 and Supra. The LFA and ISF are sweet, but who the hell can afford one?

The closer the torque is to the HP, the better it is considered then right? So the dyno 125 compared to the 151 means the take off of the car won't be that special?

I honestly think this car is going to need more power to take off in the US. I don't think I can bring myself to buy a non turbo model.

I can just see my co workers and friends asking me how much power the car has, which is the typical question you get from people who don't know much about cars, and me having to say 170whp........... Then Justify with the ricer excuse - "But it only weighs X lbs...."

It would feel too much like the old days. This car is a no go, unless the test drive blows my mind.

Switching to alternatives: 2013 Genesis GT, or used 370z.

You can still get parts though here.

Yeah, the more I research, the more the 5.0 mustang looks like a best buy.

If we are aware of this surely Subaru and Toyota are as well.

I was going to buy the Mustang, but was held off for 2 reasons.

First, they were having a 3%+ failure rate with their manual trannies, and blaming it on user error. The NHTSA did an investigation into it, and wound up siding with ford despite the large failure numbers (they switched to the getrag tranny in 2011). The same transmission had high failure previously in the Landrover, and then again in the camero. Dodge dumped the contract and Ford grabbed it up cheap.

The second is that someone found a manufacturing nub inside the Coyote engine that looked like it was for direct injection, so the rumor is that it will go DI just in time for the 50th anniversary in 2014.

The 2013 gt, boss, and cobra all got upgrades from 2012, while the V6 stayed the same.

Also there's this nugget about the 2014 stang "For all that, our source insists the 2014 Mustang will be rear drive. And yes, he adds, it will (finally) have an independent rear suspension".

direct injection is not an upgrade!!!!!!! Do some research on "Direct Injection Issues." Problem being, here in the US, we have exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). This puts spent exhaust gases back into the head. The gases then cause sludge, but on port injection the gas/fuel passes through the head and helps clean it. With direct injection, no gas/fuel hits the valves, so it builds up. Not to mention there is some of the charge that never leaves on the exit stroke that can recirculate back into the head/valves on the opening of the intake valves (minor). This build up can be detrimental to the valves and makes engine life shorter. On a performance engine, this is exacerbated. Toyota, namely Lexus, now uses dual injection (port and direct) and so does this new toyobaru because the use of both increases performance, efficiency and then gets rid of the DI problems!

    Direct Injection and build-up issues

The independent rear suspension is a big upgrade though.

How exactly is a power to weight ratio a ricer excuse?
