New Suby Version Rendering from Motor Trend

This looks the most realistic as far as styling goes that I've seen so far IMO.

Subaru Begins Reinventing Itself - Motor Trend

If we suggested that Subaru's exterior designers have been playing second fiddle to the engineering department, we probably wouldn't get many arguments. While lauded for its boxer turbo engines and standard all-wheel-drive, Subaru recently hasn't pushed the engineering envelope very much.
That's about to change. With an all-new design direction, a brand-new boxer engine range, and its controversial tie-up with Toyota, expect to see some radical changes in the Subaru camp over the next two to three years. The first evidence of this rebirth surfaced in its Impreza "Confidence-in-Motion" concept recently unveiled at the 2010 Los Angeles auto show. The sharp-looking design study might have been the base for its next Impreza, but those aggressive lines and proportions also are a harbinger of what's to come for the entire lineup. Just check out our two exclusive sketches depicted here, which reveal how one artist sees the Subaru version of the FT-86, due for 2012, as well as the Legacy Hybrid, slated to debut in 2013.

Emotional phrasing aside, we think that these two designs -- especially the new signature grille and headlight combination -- are right on the money and help transport Subaru out of the "dull and boring" basket, and into the "pay attention" category.

Those familiar with Subaru's well-known EJ-type boxer engine (which has powered nearly every model since 1989, albeit in slightly revised variants) no doubt have heard about the brand-new FB-type boxer engine, officially launched on September 23 -- Subaru's first all-new horizontally opposed powerplant in 21 years. The new 1995-cc FB20's claim to fame is its longer stroke, which means it's able to achieve maximum torque at lower revs, in addition to beefier power delivery and 10-percent better fuel consumption.

The first model to employ the new FB20 engine will be the Subaru rendition of the FT-86, co-developed with Toyota and due in 2012. Using that engine as a base, engineers will revise the head unit "by adding port injection," according to one insider, to create a Toyota-like D4-S engine with around 200 horsepower. Mated to a six-speed manual, expect a 0-60 mph sprint time around 7.5 seconds in naturally aspirated form.
The third piece of Subaru's next generation jigsaw puzzle is the addition of a hybrid to the Legacy line. After bolting on a special Subaru-tweaked Toyota THS II hybrid unit (with Atkinson Cycle technology) to a new FB25 engine, our source tells us that company engineers will then turbocharge it for better performance and fuel economy. By utilizing the most efficient characteristics of the boxer engine -- its symmetrical layout and low center of gravity -- engineers will position lithium-ion batteries on either side of the propeller shaft, thus extracting the most out of the Toyota-based hybrid system. You can also expect to see all Legacy models employing CVTs in the near future, while automatic gearboxes will be phased out.

So with some sleek new lines, a new coupe, a new engine range, and a new hybrid, Subaru is reinventing itself. And not a moment too soon.

    Nice find!

That is sexy, although lacking a FMIC. Wish the article was based on fact rather than recent news and "one artists" rendition.

Can't wait to see some real news from Subie!

Really? MotorTrend....Lame. How original of a guess, 2011 impreza concept (-2 doors) with GT-R features? Wow..the effort. Yeah, Subaru was stuck with a design until now, they need not look further.

It makes you wonder if Subaru is the one holding up the debut until they redesign their version

I really don't think they have a "216a" anything remotely near completion. I do believe that the "mule" pics are just a two door STI they likely considered working on since an two door internet 'photoshop' concept was posted many years ago.

TOP row: subaru sti concept - Google Search

Sure, I do believe that Subaru will likely release the "216a" but a year, or years, after the 86/FR-S is to be released. But, they will likely reveal their two door STI first. Subaru does have to work on how to keep the 216a down so they're looking into figuring that out now. But really, a two door STI and a 216a two door? That's pushing it. Everytime I see the "mule" I see the GRB chassis (08 - present USDM hatch STI) cut into a "coupe" NOT an 86/FR-S frame which is tiny, and the GRB chassis is not exactly short or small.

In the end, we won't know for some time. But in the mean time, I do believe all the "sport magazines" are trying to get our attention by providing speculation that's only +1 from our own opinions and they have press passes. But again that's likely most magazines too, I'm no expert, that's for sure.

Subaru and Toyota have the right idea. Giving the enthusiasts hope for a nice sports coupe will hopefully draw Nissan, Mazda, Honda out of the woodwork to produce their next generation Silvias, RX-9, and NSX.

Since that's the new Impreza design concept that was revealed at last months LA show then, that is not the 216a... It's more than likely what the new Impreza sti may look like IF, they indeed follow the "Confidence in Motion" concept.

I hope everyone understands that the above renderings are NOT MOTOTRENDS! The plate says it all... The renderings are from the infamous Japanese auto rumor magazine Holiday Auto. Their info is hit and miss. They were right about a lot of exciting things however.

This is the most common rendering I see in all the Japanese magazines. I know everyone has seen this a million times, hahahahaha.

However, the best I've seen so far and, will most likely look like the prototype version can be found on I believe the past volume of Impreza Magazine Japan.

While that is the most common, its also just a edit by 7Tune artists of the FT-86 images original snapped in October 2009.

They have been lacking in credibility of FT-86, although have been the "source" of FT-86 related info. IMO its all been rehashed info with extra emphasis on rumors, backed by a team of artists.

Good point, I hadn't even thought about that!

Yes, its from Holiday Auto, which 7Tune so rapidly brings to America's attention. Although even STi forums refer to that car as the Toyobaru...

Welcome to the site, but odd this was your first comment immediately or for joining.

However, my point is to say bring news not "other" or speculation/opinion. Sure, I did jump to conclusions with the illustration and with reason. If the illustration is not yours, mention so, instead of pastering a "Motorweek" in the image. (small print, we can all read yes?) Not everyone knows of Holiday Auto, I didn't know until now, so thanks for your mentioning. "Reports as such" have been a bit annoying to me with the automotive mags. It's not about news..but about bias, selling out, opinion and other speculation/rumors (surely not all mags). Just trying to get attention and make a few $$$ - still, work at it and report.

[However, it's more into mainstream also not just magazines that news is not always reported but opinion, which is sensationalized]

Ok back on track. You provided more information in your comment than the article despite the "new" technologys supposed but we shall see.
I'll end here, so I don't sound too about my mild rant.

But, it's all good, hope someone learns from this...I did.

West, you are a wise man with your responses. That is why you run the site. Also, you've been an FT-86 news source by many "other" larger automotive internet mags in the past. Found this out last week.

    Keep up the good work...

    Thanks for the welcome G4!

What's weird is that I posted a photo of a sketch, right after my first post, mostly used in all the current Japanese magazines I've been reading. Moderators disapprove? It's similar to the one in the newest thread: Subaru FT-86 Variant 216a to be revealed Dec 2011!

I have a feeling the concept will most likely look like it. No complaints, looks pretty sexy for a Subaru... Ah the wait is killer! Been dreaming of another coupe sti since the 22B!

First off welcome to Toyobaru! We dont disapproved. Im not sure why your image isnt showing. Were having some crappy issues with the new server due to its optimized design. We should have them ironed out this weekend!
