Rumor: Subaru Confirms Turbo FA20 Engine for BRZ?

Dont read to much into this. WOT Motortrend, reports have been deteriorating over time. Edward Loh hasn't spoken on the FT-86 since the early days of rumorville. "Subaru" hasn't confirmed anything, officially.

A representative of Subaru of America confirmed today that the company plans to build turbocharged versions of the 2.0-liter flat-four engine that recently made its debut in the companies all-new BRZ sports coupe – and in the Toyota 86/GT86 and Scion FR-S variants.

The new turbocharged variant will be based on the FA20 engine, which utilizes square architecture (86mm x 86mm bore and stroke) and the D4S port and direct injection fuel system co-developed with Toyota. FA series engines also boast more compact dimensions over the current FB-series of Subaru flat-flours that power the current line of Foresters.

The engines will be produced at the company’s Oizumi engine plant (where all Subaru engines are built) which is located at the Gunma Main Plant, where the BRZ and all Toyota/Scion variants are being produced. No details were released regarding turbo size, engine output, or future applications for the new powerplant (or which markets will receive it), but we’d have to think the BRZ would be on that list.

That doesn’t mean it will be the first application however. Earlier this year, Subaru released the all-new Impreza compact sedan and 5-door, recent product cycle history suggests that the all-wheel drive, turbocharged WRX variant is coming soon.

Does that mean the next generation WRX get the new FA20 turbo engine? Well it certainly would benefit from the compact dimensions of the FA20 and its claimed 30mpg hwy fuel efficiency rating (as a naturally aspirated starting point).

Whether the new engine comes in a WRX, BRZ, or another Subaru application, we’re always happy to see more turbos hit the market.

I want to believe, but I can't allow myself to. I just doubt a Subaru exec would confirm it with motortrend and NO ONE else.

I question the post from MT. Impreza WRX can just take existing FB turbo with bigger displacement and HP with almost no mod. What they post makes sense for US. May be for other parts of the world because engine size does matter.

Then again the article just said they would boost the engine, not that it would be going into the BRZ.

WTF would they use it in though? I mean, the BRZ/GT86 is the ONLY car so far to see the FA. So far, the FB is being used otherwise. After over 20 years of using the EJ, how can Subaru go from EJ>FB>FA so fast? Big difference between the FB and FA is the twin injection from Toyota. Direct injection has to be setup in the block from the begining. Maybe Subaru had developed the FB before Toyota came along and wanted to build the BRZ/GT86, so they'll use the FB where they can and then switch when they tool up to make enough FA's? Dunno. It doesn't make sense that they'd stick with the EJ for everything and now be making different engines like this. The reason that they did use the EJ for so long was: 1) saves money on r&d for engines. 2)saves money on having to tool for multiple engines. 3)comparable engines in every car means parts are interchangeable in many cases, so manufacturing is much easier. Most companies do this a lot, but Subaru did it 100% practically and it worked.

As you can tell, I'm still holding my breathe for a FA-T!!!!!! SOMEONE PLEASE, find a Subaru engineer and send them a link to my STI Letter Thread!!!!

The chassis may not be the exact same, the the power plant will be very much the same basic design. The engines the use all are similar mounting, the trannies are all awd (- brz), they essentially modify a similar setup for every car they make to fit in the chassis. The only changes really are chassis, suspension, engine (displacement and some get Flat 6's) and tranny differences. All of which can practically be swapped out for another type within the brand. Look how many engines and drivetrain layouts other companies have. Fwd's, awd's, rwd's etc, paired to very different engines mostly. Subaru was smart in developing one layout to the max and using it all over. Kia/Hyundai, Mitsu and Chrysler were smart in doing the 4b11 and all of them are using that engine in most of their 4 cylinder cars.

'Zactly, modifiedMR. The 4B11 is the 4-cyl. that Mitsu put in our '08 Lancer GTS and it's an engine that's as sound as a pound, carnuts.

One major issue with MT article. FA engine is backward mount vs FB and other subie engine. So the pipe work is not going to be from current turbo setup. But re routing of the pipe is not the most difficult part. I think one of our member here raise the question on how you are going to re-rout the pipe under without the pipe hitting the ground. Also how do you add the inter cooler without putting a big bump on the hood.
FA turbo might be in work, but it probably be in Impreza WRX. I see major issue with BRZ. But not impossible.
