I just realized where I've seen the dual version HVAC before: 4th and 5th gen Honda Prelude, from like 20 years ago. The JDM/RoW 4th/5th gen Prelude had a digital/auto HVAC system, while the USDM version of those cars had to make use with a standard HVAC system. The Prelude board I'm a member of has lots of retrofit threads about putting JDM HVAC control systems into 4th and 5th gens. Can't believe I forgot about it. IIRC, didn't the early 2000s Maximas also have two versions of HVAC; auto for the SE/20th AE and manual for the rest of the lines??

The point being, will the lack of an auto HVAC system really detract from the driving experience THAT much? It's a nicety that the Scion won't offer, in exchange for a lower MSRP than the BRZ over here, I'll betcha. Same with the other cheaper interior bits. All in the name of keeping a low MSRP. So if the BRZ really will be priced around $25k USD, in theory the FR-S should be a few grand lower, for the cheaper interior.

As long as the driving mechanicals are exact same (includ. LSD), then you can still enjoy driving it as much as the BRZ.

    more then just HVAC

For me it has a lot more to do with just the HVAC. I can see hitting a price point, but this could have been done through a toyota dealership where a base and premium offering could have been made. Instead we have no choice but to purchase a stripped version of what everyone else is getting. We don't get the nice engine cover, lower dash toggle switches, starter button, heated seats(buttons in the center console), leather (we get suede everything), shifter knob, door inserts, tail pipes, fog lights, or headlights. All of these things made it a quality car for the masses, but as it is, I would be embarrased to let anyone ride inside without a blindfold. The interior is hideous. Truely.
The sad part is, the scion is now competing with the Honda civic SI coupe on performance and price. But the civic offers trim options.
I know Cal mention the subaru, but I was so hooked on the toyota looks, that I'm just going to tap out on this one. Maybe in a few years they'll offer a better interior and trim, maybe by then they'll have screwed up the looks...lol.

Unless you are in US or CAN, then you have no option for scion. If you are anywhere other than NA, Toyota does offer options.

So basically toyota bummed the US really hard, and hooked the rest of the world up. Such a disappointment. Take my money to subaru aswell. Interiors trash. Although it's not 100% horrible it's pretty bad, especially compared to toyota's 86. Doesn't make sense huge disappointment on toyota's part

Don't forget though that Scion is based on the accessories principle, where certain things can be upgraded/added at the dealership àla carte. Not nessecarily the HVAC or toggle switches, but I'm sure you'll be able to get fogs, spoiler, leather, heated seats, shift knob, etc at the dealership... IF YOU WANT THEM.

I actually prefer the àla carte priciple vs. option pkgs, because most times with pkgs. you have to take things you don't want, to get the things you really do want. I can live with the manual HVAC, and pile on the extras I really want. Plus, all it gives you is one extra thing that can break on it.

Only bad thing about single menu options for cars at Scion is that you have to pay to get them installed.

+1 Subaru. I go to Subaru meets every week with my friend who has an STi-swapped 2.5RS, so I can actually fit in instead of showing up in my MR2, lol.

Unless the Scion weighs and costs enough less to justify it's cheap-ness relative to the BR-Z, I won't waste my time. I don't get my Toyota cost+10% discount on parts anymore, but I have a friend who can get me the same discount at Subie so let's hope the SPT/STi upgrades are the same caliber as TRD

2013 Subaru BRZ Limited 6MT - on order
    2012 Audi S4 6MT - company lease, baby!
    1987 Toyota MR2 - 20v blacktop screamer
    1973 Datsun 240Z - highway monster project

Makes you wonder though. If the BRZ base is supposed to retail for 24K then what will the Scion base be for? 19k? 21k?

Yeah, for 22k, I might get snagged for a base and start my build! Already got 7.5" F and 9.5" R rims that should fit (dual 5 lug rims from my mr2). Going to wait to see what kind of aftermarket support first though. I'm not biting if this car ends up like a 2zz celica/ rx-8/ s2000 where lots of $ = minor gains. I like modding cars, if you couldn't tell.

Was that dubstep playing in the video? I just can't shake the feeling that a bunch of marketing peeps got together, google the word "cool" and tried to make the scion based off of that.

I can see the FRS being a huge hit with the highschool crowd.
