Talking Spy Shots of Toyota FT-86 "86" at the Nürburgring, aka Scion FR-S

The Toyota FT-86 "86" is showing its face again, this time around the ring of Nürburgring. While many are calling this the Scion FR-S, remember the Toyota and Scion share the same chassis from Subaru. This is likely why we are seeing the test car look more like a Subaru than a Toyota or Scion. But when it debuts across the planet it could land under all brands, although Toyota and Scion are the only known releases.

A lot can change in two days. Remember that Scion FR-S prototype we spied heading to the Nürburgring earlier this week? Well, it's turned into the car you see here, now complete with a more aggressive body kit and a proper wing out back.

Adding the body kit makes the FR-S look much more like the concept car that debuted in New York, and while that big rear spoiler will certainly look more appropriate on the Subaru-badged version of the FT-86 joint venture, it still makes us swoon. (Supra Turbo, anyone?)

We fully expect to see more of the Toyobaru rear-wheel-drive sport coupe as it goes through the full gauntlet of summer testing. Stay tuned for more information as the swirly camouflage gets peeled away.

    SWEET!!!

Love that body work! I think that one is RWD because you can't see a front axle in the center rim like you can on the rear.

Also, the body lean is pretty well controlled for a production car. I'm impressed.

Cool, it's starting to look like a production model!

The wing is for turbo models... jk
The exhaust and rear diffuser (or lack of) look normal.
The rear tail lights still protrude and I don't like it, but it's not a deal breaker.
The front fender vent accent things are gone.
The front and profile views are very sleek and a bit more plain than the prototype, me likey.
It's nice to see the wheel wells at production height vs lowered with giant rims.
Perhaps the reduction in 'bling' will keep this car priced in the lower 20 K's?

    Thumbs down Really?

I'm finding it hard to get excited about the current vanilla scoop when we've been shown banana splits and triple fudge sundaes so far. I don't think I can watch. Major disappointment. I had expected way more then this.

This is the Toyo/Scion version, notice the FT-86 emblem in camouflage on the fender, just forward of the mirror.

I like your way with words... but, I'm used to production models being way more 'vanilla' than the prototypes shown at auto shows.

What sorts of whipped cream, nuts and cherry on top did you like the most on the prototype that's missing from this "spyed" model?

If you had one of the above "spyed" cars, would you do anything like a body kit or some aftermarket parts to like 'restore' it to the prototype style?

HOLY DOWNFORCE BATMAN!! Im excited to see this without all the swirly masking tape. and sad to say i think id be okay buying a scion now. That wing puts an STI's wing to shame.

This was my exact thought, you beat me to it. I mean, Toyota could have saved a lot of r&d and just put some new body panels on the old gts and dropped in the boxer engine.

I followed the Saturn sky, the chevy camaro, both just like their show car counterparts. So I expected wheel size to change, vents to fogs, light changes. There is hardly any resemblance to the show car. It reminds me of when NASCAR puts a mustang decal on a shapeless shell and claims it's a mustang, when it bears no curve or shape of the original.
I wouldn't have anywhere to start if I bought this and tried to recreate the show car. I want what was shown last. The FRS show car. It has shape, this is just another square block with some marks to identify it with the show car. To me, body kits look like tacked on after thoughts. I can't stand the black add ons because they only confirm that the final product will have none of the show cars graceful design. The FRS show car was a conservative exotic this is neither. The test car is flat and boy-racer.
Sorry If this comes off angry, I'm not angry, just disappointed.

I see where you're coming from and yes, its a sobering feeling when you think of what they parted with from the show car. That beauty had curves. Many of which alot of us wish could have stayed, but this car also stands out from others because its supposed to be "affordable" so its a compromise on our part by understanding that certain things just have to go :[
this thing just better be worth out money and wait... im hoping a fair price of around 20K or 19K as an optimist hahaha

    ^lol. try 25k base probably.

i like it. it does look alot like the supra.

I agree with those about the 90's toyota's. They were haus. I own a 91 turbo, currently fs though as i might buy this car or something cheaper used. Those cars had alot of power, reliability and potential. The newest celica's really didn't have much power or potential for modding, especially compared to the Alltrac's and GT4's.

Toyota has a chance here to really stir up some excitement with a new sports car. Will they live up to their past cars (AE86/Supra/MR2) or will they fall short by making a car that looks good, but lacks power, potential and the soul they used to have. Such as the 7th gen celica, mr-s (car with a stronger motor/tranny would have worked though) and older tC's (the newer ones are getting close to par) were all examples of a car that could have been better. The mr-s should have had the 2zz with a six speed at least. Then it might be off the weak list.

I have hope though, because of all the time they've had to develope this car. The engine should be pretty stout and so should the tranny. If they don't come with a turbo option very soon, I may not buy one.

might be an option or like someone else said an "action package" similar to the celica with a whole aero setup. seeing how they are testing with both, I think they are actually making it functional.

the tails don't look good though

Is this the final version of the Scion FR-S? Please enlighten me, this pup looks great ta me.

That whole shape looks good and I love those wheels.

Shek it out. Member it's shorter in stature than a Chevy Cobalt Coupe, and the Cobalt Coupe ain't very long!

I tell you what, when the spy shots first came out I was a little disappointed because it looked like they muted or removed those awesome fender arches. But in these you can make them out pretty clearly.

So I think it'll look pretty damn good.

That effing wing is hideous, though. Give me the little muted one. After driving around my Cobalt SS/SC for six years, I'd be glad to get some rear visibility back.

^ The wing is high enough as to not impede visibility.

As an STi owner, I can tell you that the wing on that car is high enough to impede visibility, anything above the decklid will impede rearward visibilty.

No. It is the final concept version. See Exitspeeds's post on that.
