Lightbulb Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S Manual Gets 22-MPG City, 30-MPG Highway

Small, rear-wheel drive, manually shifted coupes can be exciting, no? Fun and zippy to drive, and because of their tighter dimensions and lower weight, they tend to be easy on the gas, right?

Well, in the case of the Subaru BRZ and the Scion FR-S, maybe not as much as we'd have hoped. Sure, they have smallish 2.0-liter four-cylinders and six-speed manual transmissions, but their hunger for gasoline is just average. Official EPA fuel efficiency numbers are in, and the BRZ and FR-S with manual transmissions net 22 miles per gallon city and 30 highway on premium fuel. Still, that's about the same as the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe with the four-cylinder and manual tranny which gets 21/30 on premium, and it's better than the aging Mazda MX-5 Miata which returns 21/28.

The BRZ and FR-S chug less fuel if you outfit them with the optional automatic transmission. They probably won't be as much fun, but they will return numbers close to 25 city/34 highway.

I bet it has a lot to do with the direct injection and high compression. Besides who cares about gas mileage in a sports car.

That's about the same mileage that I get with my 2.5L turboed legacy's motor. Kind of a shame, I figured for sure they'd have it up around 34 hwy.

But everyone's mileage will vary, literally. This big legacy is rated below what I get out of it too, so real world driving might see higher mpg here. Premium fuel, huh?

It will probably get similar mileage per person because of the way it's built. I used to have a 2000 celica gt. Didn't matter if I was driving it hard or cruising, seemed to get about the same mpg all the time. Light and efficient means that most of the power will be used to accelerate, unlike a turbo car. lol

I hope my mileage won't be hurt too much with an HKS Rotrex supercharger kit

uh, yeah, expect about 5 mpg less, but many more smiles per gallon

30 highway isn't bad, but considering it is rwd (not awd), has d-4s injection and 12.5:1 compression, I'd think it would be at minimum 32 mpg highway and 25 mpg city. Especially for a car that weighs about 2700 lbs. My mr2 turbo gets 20-22 mpg average with a 20g and 50 psi base fuel pressure (up from 44 psi) to compensate for the larger turbo. I am hoping when I install my apexi pfc (new pre-tuned ECU), it will be more like 24 mpg average and will have 300+ whp. That is if the clutch will hold and I keep off the throttle. lol. project cars = $
