Thumbs up Subaru Confirms BRZ for Frankfurt show as the Toyota FT-86 Variant

Its official! Subaru has finally announced the debut of its upcoming concept. The once rumored Subaru 086a/216a, Subaru FT-86 variant will officially be known as the Subaru BRZ, or Subaru BRZ Prologue. The letters stand for Boxer Rear-drive Zenith.

Set your calendars for September 13th and 14th as the official press days at the Frankfurt 2011 Motor Show where the new concept will debut.

Production is set to begin Spring 2012, same time as the Scion FR-S and Toyota FT-86. The only question we have now is what shores the BRZ will land on?

So thats it, we now have three official concept car names, built around the same platform. As if this cars story hasn't been enough, there is much more in their futures. Now, the excitement begins.

Stupid question but what's the difference between the Scion and the Subie version? Why the wait?

They are both RWD, it seems.

The engine option might be different. The body will have minor changes. Scion might not have any option available while Subie will have a lot of trims and options. No one know till Frankfurt show. I am hoping Subie will give out more engine spec by then.

I was excited to find this news today!

@silentheart - I think it's just called "BRZ" and "Prologue" is a title to their announcement. So no BRZ Prologues from Subaru.

Seeing these comments here and recalling previous speculations I wonder; why do so many of you assume there's a bunch of Subaru variants for the new car and so few for Scion? STi, TRD, Turbos, N/A, RWD, AWD, Trak/ Blue/ Spec or whatever you call a stripped model, etc. It seems like any company makes variants of their cars, so what am I missing? Is it simply because Toyota has given us a clue of what they will deliver and those clues point to one car, while at the same time, Subaru has been very mysterious, so our imaginations let us create a bunch of concepts?

Does anyone think there will be "skin" on this BRZ come September?

SCION DOES NOT MAKE MODELS!!! TRD anything from Scion are not models, but part options. They are not installed from the factory and then you have to PAY for the install. It's stupid. Look up Scion's page. There are not models, just cars. They make "limited edition series," but those are almost just look upgrades with a plaque (read: weaksauce).

Subaru, on the other hand, has a standard set of models like Toyota. Subaru has been more niche oriented and pushed the off-road/awd/performance they aspire to have, to the limits. Look up the specs of the STI and find a Toyota for less than 60k that will even be close to the performance of one. NADA. The IS350 is about as good as you'll get from Toyota, but won't touch a STI as far as real performance goes and costs 7k more base.

IMO, Toyota could have built this car on the IS platform with the 2gr easily. IMO, take out the leather and lots of other luxuries, add a tiny bit of power and sell it for 30k. It would have sold fine and took little work to make. This car, however, has more potential as far as overall performance by having better weight distribution and hopefully more performance aspect when designing. Just not near the power of the 2gr as we know thus far.

And to the second part of this. Yes. I cannot imagine Subaru trying to bring the same clear concept to show, when the are supposed to go on sale in early 2012! It does say they are going to show the "prologue." Whatever that is.

My questions I would like answered at this show are as follows:
-Will either company come out with a boosted version?
-Will the boosted version be available in the US?
-Will the Subaru be available to the US?
-What kind of lsd will it have?
-What trim levels with what amount of power are going to be available to the US?
-What kind of pricing can we expect?
-How many dead bodies can fit in the trunk? LOL (top gear reference)

To me, these are the key points.

What others might like to know.
-Will there be an AWD vesion? (probably not or not anytime soon would be my guess)
-Will there be a hybrid setup for it? (probably just like above.) (don't crz the brz!!!)

Where does "Zenith" fit in? Call it a BRC. Boxer RWD Coupe. Also, it's close to wrc, the roots of the company's racing history.

If you look at the website linked in the story it's pretty much the same thing as the original concept, except it has yellow neons.

In other words, "same stupid bullshit"!

Wait, maybe, just maybe, they might release more information about the drivetrain (engine size(s), na and turbo?), etc? Still, my nuggets are hurting.

Well crap, who cares about the damn technology concept when it's without specifications.

At least we know we will see a Subaru model, Subaru had been too silent with this ordeal.

Another thing that bothers me is the engine placement in the preview images shown at:

SUBARU | The 64th Frankfurt Motor Show

In the top down view you can clearly see that more than half of the engine block is infront of the centerline of the struts. Which is decidedly not a "front mid-engine" design.
