Post Toyota FT-86 Hybrid a Possibility Says Toyota

Consider the fact that this response was vaguely responded with a "Why Not an Hybrid"? Well, if you dont recall there is no current Boxer hybrid, one is rumored for 2013.

Nothing says keeping to your AE86 roots like electric motors spinning the wheels... Either way, a Hybrid would be cool option as long as there are petrol only version. I have a suspicion we will see electric in the future Supra.

It’s a welcome return to sporting Toyotas of the past – but the new FT-86 is likely to spawn a hybrid version, the firm has revealed.

The rear-wheel-drive coupé was unveiled at the Geneva show in near-production form, and will be built alongside a sister car from Subaru, which also supplies the 2.0-litre flat-four boxer petrol engine.

We asked a Toyota spokesman whether a hybrid could be built, and he told us: “Why not? It’s no secret we’ve been considering a hybrid sports car for a while.”

The maker claims the scoop-like grille and sweeping profile have been “generated purely according to the constraints of function and aerodynamics”. Subaru decided at the last minute not to display its version of the car, but instead showed a ‘wire-frame’ teaser model focusing on the engine, suspension and Lineartronic CVT gearbox that will be used.

Company insiders told Auto Express that we should expect more aggressive styling touches on the production version of the as-yet-unnamed Subaru. It’s likely that both manufacturers will unveil their production-ready designs at the Tokyo Motor Show later this year, with sales expected to start some time in 2012.

Yeah doens't bother me as long as it's just an option. If it ends up being all hybrid I won't be happy. I don't see them doing that though because none of the concepts have been hybrids at all and there too far along in the process to just throw that in.

With the way gas prices are sky rocketing, a hybrid option would be the smart decision. In the future, you can put 1 electric motor on each wheel and get at least 1,000 hp. Jaguar has already done it with their electric concept vehicle, so why can't Toyota? Bring it.

So that means no traditional manual?

So... how much of this is speculation, and opinion of the original Toyota rep at Geneva to leave the possibility open. I dont think anyone would say NO there will not be a hybrid ___ at Toyota, for any model.

Look for Toyota Hybrid news over the past few news days and you will see Toyota pushing the Government for Hybrid incentives, news of a new vision by Toyota, along with reports of 10 new hybrid models by 2015.

Not once did I see the FT-86 mentioned. Not that I care Just give me an non electric model and Ill be happy.

I agree with West, this stuff is all speculation.

I still believe that Toyota's going to stay true to the original idea of the FT, light, rwd, affordable coupe. I mean that IS the point of it. Nothing else.

That doesn't mean there won't be other options such as cvt transmission, and optional hybrid powertrain (both targeted at the countless women that will by this vehicle because it's "my cute little sportscar OMG!" *said with a super lispy girly voice*).
