Turbo Scion FR-S Tested at Laguna Seca!

Sounds good, but will it get more power? That’s been the No. 1 followup question since long before joint Toyota/Subaru effort that became the U.S. bound 2013 Scion FR-S (and its Subaru BRZ twin) rear drive sports coupe ever saw the light of day.

Reading the tea leaves after our recent drives of the FR-S and BRZ, it’s all but certain that the Subaru-derived 200-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder 4U-GSE boxer will eventually be boosted to deliver more horses, but when?

If the FR-S prototype that our very own Web production manager Kirill Ougarov recently spotted at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is any indication, it looks like it won’t be long. Ougarov, who shot the photos, indicated that the white car was ‘definitely’ turbocharged.

Speaking of drifting, given that both the white-winged car and the car behind it were FR-S models, it stands to reason that this could be the Scion drift team getting in some testing before the 2012 season. Scion is heavy into drifting and has campaigned a tC modified to rear drive specifically for the team.

It’s an absolute no brainer for the FR-S to take over as the Scion drift team star, but it stands to reason that in order to really get its drift on, the FR-S would need more power.

Whatever the reason for its presence at Mazda Raceway, the FR-S turbo sighting is good news for drift fans and all those who already can’t wait for a higher spec version of the FR-S. Given that the base FR-S and BRZ won’t be on sale in base form until mid-year, we wouldn't expect any turbocharged production model until close to the end of 2012.

Still doesn't change it for me. Hopefully that'll make the NA first couple year ones depreciate a little more and I can pick up a used for for really cheap.

I would just like a TRD supercharger that I could add on later after I so can save up and get a hook up through the parts manager.

I wonder what makes this think it was "definitely" turbocharged.

**Edit** It's after that stupid Mercedes ad that I kept pausing so I wouldn't have to listen to it.

I like the fact they notice that the car is being filmed and slow it down in the straight.

    SWEET.

Very interesting thing to note: it has the same guttural boxer rumble as the STi. This means UEL headers on the turbo, which means traditional turbo placement I reckon. The new legacy GT has its turbo under the front of the engine with EL headers, and while that is great for reducing turbo lag, it also places physical limits on the size of a turbo we can get under there. The only mods people have been able to do so far with this placement are turbo internals. Plus, the legacy lost the boxer rumble!

    This is good news!

Edit: on second thought, maybe that was the darker car behind it? Can't see it very well in this tiny video...

    Update!

It is well known that the 2013 Scion FR-S is an iconic sports car born to be on the race track. And few tracks are as iconic and legendary as Laguna Seca and its infamous corkscrew. Ken Gushi was lucky enough to take not only a stock FR-S up to the scenic hills of Monterey, CA but also an early prototype for his GReddy Racing FR-S drift car!

Speculation, actually. Thought I had proof but then I realized I was thinking about the UpGarage 86 they're building in Japan. No one has developed parts for this engine yet or if they have they're being very mum about it. I doubt they could build a 600hp FA20 in such a short period of time. Swapping in an EJ with 600hp and 500lb/ft would be easy. I also don't think 500lb/ft in an FA20 is achievable.

    Here's a link to the UpGarage 86: UpGarage/Droo-P/AVO D1GP 86 | Tune86 - Toyota 86 news (GT 86, Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S)

You can get a quick look at the engine at around 0:52 in that video above, maybe one of you gearheads can nail it down through that. :P A swapped STI engine would explain why it sounded like an STI to me though!

Not much to discern, but my intuition tells me it's an EJ

it's already been done and it was pretty much known when tada dropped the line that the FA and EJ use the same motor mounts and configurations (basically).

Swapping out the stock N/A engine for an already boosted engine that uses the same mounts, and parts..... hmmm sounds familar.....
