» Welcome to Toyobaru.net - Toyota FT-86 Forums and Subaru 086a / 216a Forums |
Welcome to Toyobaru.net, the original Toyota FT-86 & Subaru 086a Forums - Toyobaru is dedicated to the Toyota FT-86 Concept and Subaru 086a / Subaru 216a Concept sport cars, D-4S Boxer Engine, and said fans. We offer the best Forums, Gallery, Blogs, Technical Articles and News.
Home of the future "86" (Hachi Roku) FT86, a lightweight rear wheel drive based sports car co-developed by Toyota and Subaru. Inspiration of its development comes directly from the legacy Toyota AE86. The Toyota FT-86 and Subaru 086a / 216a variant promises to deliver excellent control due to the lightweight body and low center of gravity thanks to its flat four cylinder engine developed by Subaru.

| Rumor: No AWD planned for the Subaru FT-86 Variant (216a) |
|

An interesting rumor is circulating; 7Tune.com sourced an article in Best Car magazine that reported Subaru has denied development of AWD for its FT-86 variant, codenamed 086a or 216a. Meaning they will be sticking with a RWD format identical to the Toyota FT-86. It was reported development will now focus on the ascetics of the car rather than additional engineering costs needed to make the chassis AWD. Why you ask? Subaru blames the economy, while spending millions in development of its hybrid technology and other concept cars. Subaru, aren’t you the same Fuji Heavy Industries that co developed the FT-86 engine and drive train to begin with? It’s laughable to think Subaru hasn’t already designed the AWD system needed for the 216a.

The Subaru FT-86 variant is still a mythical figure in the auto world, one which no creditable source of information has even confirmed the existence of the car. We do have rumored images of the Toyobaru strolling around Nürburgring and orange county California. However nothing tangible has been reported to the public, and so for now the rumors mean nothing considering AWD or RWD haven’t even been announced. You ask me, AWD will happen.

Are we all taking as read that this will be 2000cc from an EJ20 derived engine? Personally, if its NA and a motor from Subaru, I would like to see the 2.5 litre EJ25 in the hole up front. This would grunt along nicely in a car weighing 1000 - 1100kg. There is an engine class capacity limit of 2500cc in one of the more popular forms of motor-sport in this country, and it would be good to be 'right on the limit' rather than battling with a 2000cc car up against 2500cc machines...and yet now that I think about it further, GT5 seems to indicate that the engine is a 2 litre...

So, when do you think the FT-86 Concept will make its first appearance in the States at an Auto Show?
New York International Auto Show early next month? Or do you think we'll have to wait until Detroit next year?
Edit: Forget New York, just found the Concept Car page and no sign of the FT-86 http://www.autoshowny.com/galleries/concept#

Check it, 40 amazing images of the Toyota FT-86 concept photo shoot with Jaromir Cech at Europe Design Development (ED2). This shows some of the original artwork created by Jaromir and the ED2 team. This really shows how the car has progressed from the drawing table to its concepts production, truly amazing. I want his job!
You will notice the few interior items which might of gone unnoticed...
1. 6-Speed shifter, Reverse is in the more "European" left position. Anyone familiar with a Subaru equivalent?
2. Traction Control and ABS switches
3. USB attachments in the center console?
Enjoy the eye candy! (Sketches are near the bottom)
